The past period is the cause, the cause of suffering (samudaya saca). Ignorance and conditional activities (avijja sankhara) in the past period belong to phase one, or perhaps considered as a  division one.

In the present period, the arising of the five aggregates beginning with rebirth consciousness (vinnana) is the effect. It is the noble truth of suffering (dukka sacca). It is the second phase or second division.

In the present period craving, clinging, deeds (tanha, upadana, bava) are causes for future rebirth. It is the noble truth of the real and true cause of suffering (samudaya sacca). It is phase three or division three.
